Koha Integrated Library System (ILS)

Koha
Official Website: https://koha-community.org/

Koha is the first free software library automation package.
In use worldwide, its development is steered by a growing community of users
collaborating to achieve their technology goals.
Koha’s feature set continues to evolve and expand to meet the needs of its user base.

Koha Software means the software known as the Koha Integrated Library Management System
originally developed for Horowhenua Library Trust, further developed by the Koha Community
and distributed from the website maintained by the Koha Community (currently http://koha-community.org).

n 1999 the Horowhenua Library Trust in New Zealand contracted with Katipo Communications
to develop a new ILS before their existing system failed due to Y2K.
During the proposal process, Katipo suggested to the library that the software they
developed should be released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) to ensure the project
lived on and would be able to be supported by other companies

Dispute with LibLime / PTFS

In 2009 a dispute arose between LibLime and other members of the Koha community.
The dispute centred on LibLime's apparent reluctance to be inclusive with the content of the sites
and the non-contribution of software patches back to the community.
A number of participants declared that they believed that LibLime had forked the software and the community.
A separate web presence, source code repository and community was established.
The fork continued after March 2010, when LibLime was purchased by PTFS.

In November, 2011, LibLime announced they had been granted a provisional trademark
on the use of the name koha in New Zealand by Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand.
The provisional trademark grant was successfully appealed by the Koha community as well as by Catalyst,
with a decision handed down in December 2013[32] and with Liblime to pay costs.
